The Freud puppet is coming along nicely; I did some sketches of what the character would be, and I like what came out. When I was thinking about Freud’s personality and how that would manifest itself, I always pictured this guy who was a mixture of Bert from Sesame Street and Brain from Animaniacs. Mind you, I never made a comprehensive study of Freud’s personality, but I’ve read quite a bit about his theories and some of the mishaps surrounding his rise and fall from glory. Frankly, Freud had a brilliant mind, but was also a bit of a nut job.
I wasn’t sure if I should make Freud loopy, plain, or cantankerous. In the end, I favored cantankerous and crotchety. I mean, after all, Freud did a LOT of unethical things to his patients and colleagues. He didn’t do a great job adjusting his theories, and wouldn’t accept alternate opinions. Frankly, Freud had some issues! Even so, he was the father of psychoanalysis, which is why I suppose modern psychologists still talk about him, and why there are still neo-Freudians today. At any rate, I wanted a character that could be neurotic, unintentionally funny, serious, frustrated, and confused at any given time; I think the third design provides an expression that would work well for any of those, as well as being the most “puppetable.”
Now the next step is to just start a-buildin’! This is gonna be fun.
